Handicapping Your MBA Odds - Poets&Quants

Home Schooled, Rust Belt Guy at No-Name firm
Wants to Go to HBS. Is He Dreaming? Maybe Not.

After all, he sports an impressive 760 GMAT (42 verbal/ 50 quant) score. When he matriculates to an MBA program, he will have had five years of experience at a rust belt manufacturer in the midwest, first as a financial analyst and then as a controller, for a $25 million division. This 26-year-old professional, in fact, is the youngest controller in the company’s history and currently the youngest manager at the company.

And he has racked up some noteworthy accomplishments. In one year as controller, the company has gone from a net loss to break-even thanks to a plan he worked on with senior leadership to boost revenue and cut expenses. He has since recommended a plan to reach $1 million profit to the executive team and implementation is underway.

WANTS TO USE THE MBA TO TRANSITION INTO BRAND MANAGEMENT JOB AT A CPG COMPANY WITH MANUFACTURING

He also has some neat extracurriculars, including working with refugees to help them adjust to life in the U.S., both during and after college. He wants an MBA to transition into brand manager at a leading CPG company with American manufacturing. His long-term goal is be a CEO.

But this professional also was home schooled and then went to a small, no-name private college in the midwest where he majored in accounting and racked up a 3.5 GPA.

Will his undergraduate experience complicate his acceptance into his target schools: Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Kellogg and Dartmouth Tuck? In this Fridays With Sandy episode, HBSGuru Sandy Kreisberg assesses his chances of getting into one of those top MBA programs.
