Purpose
- The Data Engineer / Analyst plays a key role in our ability to diagnose correlations/causes, predict outcomes and prescribe action based on data. They help the organization identify hypotheses and the relationships between business processes and business outcomes.
- Applying disciplined data analysis, the data engineer tests the common understandings and new ideas about business processes. The test results and learnings are then translated into human and system behaviors that drive improved results for the organization.
- This role understands how to map a business processes to the data they create and how to describe that process from the data’s perspective.
- This individual can communicate effectively with business process owners, data subject matter experts, and technical systems resources. They understand how to elicit needs and display their findings in language that business stakeholders can understand.
- Staying current with industry applications of advanced analytics, the data engineer creates competitive advantages through collaborating with business teams in using data to achieve new or improved business results using data.
Essential Duties
Build Advanced Data Solutions
- Collaborate with business functions and regions to identify opportunities to use data and advanced analytics techniques to improve business results. Elicit business goals from business owners and identify use cases for advanced data analysis.
- Understand business process behaviors, identify data that describes the process and create exploratory data integrations and visualizations. Validate current understanding of process by visualizing related data and validate with process owners. Visualize and explain basic data descriptors such as central tendency and spread as well as seasonality and trends/noise.
- Facilitate brainstorming and idea gathering sessions to identify potential process changes and their impact on business results. Assist business process owners in understanding correlations between components of their process and results. Create statistical models to test hypotheses and proposed changes or model future outcomes.
- Visualize data and explain results and build consensus on findings. Translate findings into potential process changes and lead pilot efforts to measure results. Assist business process owners in understanding the benefits of being data driven and using predictive methods to achieve results.
- Work with peers to implement and scale successful experiments in production environments that can be cost-effectively operated and supported. Assist the business process owners in defining change management plans as needed.
Visualize Data using Tableau
- Assist business process owners in building data visualizations of their processes and business outcomes/KPIs. Review data visualizations and provide guidance on best practices and visuals for conveying results.
- Build dashboards and data visualizations as needed to assist projects and business process owners in understanding KPIs/results and impacts of change on performance. Promote new thinking through visualizing and analyzing business processes in new ways.
Develop Data-Driven Strategy
- In partnership with the Enterprise Architecture, strategize, plan, prioritize, schedule and manage the execution and development of technology components to enable the organization to be more data-driven.
- Along with teammates, build a library of reusable assets and best practices to speed development of new data-driven capabilities.
- Identify and understand industry uses of data and advanced analytics (AI/ML/etc.) and propose how these concepts can build competitive advantage for Newmont.

Training & Experience
Knowledge:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Math, Statistics, Computer Science or related field.
- MBA studies or Post graduate are preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in business intelligence, data warehousing or data analysis
- 2+ years as data analyst/scientist building statistical models in a business environment
- 3+ years of experience with SQL, Python and Tableau
- Knowledge of AI/ML techniques and algorithms, such as k-NN, Naive Bayes, SVM, Decision Forests, etc.
- Experience with cloud compute (AWS/Google) and services preferred
- Mining, construction, utilities or other heavy industry experience is preferred
- Experience with SAP Enterprise Resource Planning, Mining, Financial, Supply Chain, Asset Management and Human Resources preferred
Skills and Abilities:
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to tell stories, interact with all members of a technical team, end users, business stakeholders and Senior Leadership
- Applied statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, regression, etc.
- Ability to explain statistical concepts to non-statistical audiences
- Creative thinking and problem solving, including logical and structured decision making.
- Facilitation and consulting skills.
- Elicitation and interviewing skills to understand needs and problems
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
Working Conditions
- The position is located in the Denver corporate office.
- Willingness to put in extra hours as projects and priorities dictate.
- Flexible hours to accommodate global meeting times.
- Position may be required to travel to, and assist other domestic and international sites.
