Purpose

The intern would support the Environmental sub function of the Sustainability and External Relations (S&ER) group.  This sub function provides policy, strategies, standards and subject matter expertise to the corporation in all areas of the environment, including water resources, energy & climate, biodiversity, waste and hazardous materials management, and mine permitting.  External Relations works to obtain and strengthen broad social acceptance before, during, and beyond the life of a mine. The Social Responsibility sub-function supports the work with neighboring communities at each of Newmont’s sites while the External Relations sub-function builds relationships with global, national, and regional stakeholders.

Essential Duties

Scope and Responsibilities

The internship will ideally be from May 2019 – August 2019. The exact dates are flexible depending on the student’s availability. It is assumed that the internship will be fulltime (40 hours/week) during the summer. Interns will receive a stipend.  

 

The work will be designed to execute with little supervision at the Corporate Headquarters located in Greenwood Village, CO, and may include travel to one or more of Newmont’s sites.  There is ample opportunity for internal networking around the company.

 

The intern will be responsible for implementing specific Environmental projects during the course of his or her internship, as well as supporting the day-to-day activities of the department. The exact projects will be determined according to the intern’s availability, interest, skills, and experience. This may include supporting other sub-functions of the S&ER group.

 

Possible projects include:

  • Research into multiple topics including circular economy, energy and climate change, biodiversity, and water
  • General support to the Environmental Team for data analyses and reporting
  • Support investigation of external certification and/or frameworks for biodiversity and water stewardship
  • Support regions and sites on specific issues related to environment including ecosystem and community health metrics
  • Collect and organize water and energy & climate data in support of  CDP water and climate questionnaires
  • Develop guidance documents for energy and climate adaptation
  • Participate on and provide support to the closure and reclamation working group, Global Water Strategy Team, Energy and Climate Global Team

Training & Experience

Qualifications:

  • Graduate students preferred, graduating in December 2020 or later – MBA, Environmental Engineering, Master’s in Mine Engineering, and degrees related to Water Resources and Geology. Other similar disciplines will be considered.
  • Women and students with experiences of different and diverse cultures are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Experience in mining and/or passion to learn about the mining industry
  • Organized and good project management skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills & comfort engaging senior leaders and global teams
  • Strong research methods capability and writing skills
  • At least a 3.0 GPA or equivalent
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for the Environment and Sustainability (for example: through coursework, personal travel, upbringing, extracurricular activities, past work experience, volunteer work)
